Downshift: “slow” philosophy and zero behind the wheel

Being present is also being with others. Take a break to celebrate, to share, to toast and enjoy. I think we can start from the philosophy of pause and care to expand awareness, establish good practices and give a new meaning to enjoyment. Reflecting on our habits and identifying opportunities to transform them is what we want to achieve when we talk about responsible consumption from a company in which we are dedicated, for the most part, to the marketing of alcoholic beverages. Years ago we created and promoted the figure of the Driver and Designated Drivera concept that has to do with empathy and responsibility, and that we can proudly say that it was adopted by a large part of society, being a clear example that it is possible to install new positive habits.

According to a report on Federal Alcoholemia by the National Road Safety Agency (ANSV), in almost two years the cases of alcohol at the wheel in the country fell by 75%. It’s a sign that some customs are changing and, these days, the news reports about new and very valuable road safety regulations that promote zero alcohol at the wheel.

From the company we address the issue around three axes, Zero in minors, Zero at the wheel and Zero excesses, through awareness, training and interventions, to promote a collective culture in which all actors take an active role. This year we focused on everyone, as citizens, being promoters of the culture of zero alcohol at the wheel. Seeking to transform habits and promote a cultural transformation, we carry out initiatives such as the Pilot Cities project, an agreement signed in June of last year with the municipality of Quilmes, through which we seek to contribute to reducing road incidents by 10% and road accidents by 25% local alcohol abuse.

There are care practices that many of us carry out without thinking why we do it or what consequences they have: the decision to don’t drive if you’re going to drink; choose to be a Designated Driver; planning a return from an outing; offer water to alternate with drinks and meals to avoid excesses or just ask how they are doing, are practices that can be transformative actions, and becoming aware of this can help us multiply them. It is about understanding enjoyment not from excesses, but from caring for others and oneself, so that the barbecue with the family is repeated, so that this meeting with friends becomes a memorable memory.

Returning to the question of time, we then ask ourselves: Why is the “slow” philosophy related to responsible consumption? Somehow, slowing down has to do with becoming aware to be able to do things differently. In that deceleration, there is a return to what is properly human. Going slower enables us to bond in another way, to pay attention, to make decisions with a fresh mind. On the contrary, fatigue, speed, the demand for constant effort, affect our health, both physical and mental. As a society we usually go to an extreme to realize what was brewing. In this case, we have the opportunity to stop in time and reverse the acceleration, to enjoy life conscientiously.

From Cervecería y Maltería Quilmes and together with civil society organizations, specialists, communicators, scientists, thinkers, strategic partners, our entire value chain, and mainly our people, we want to promote and promote this cultural change, so that we have a future more leisurely and careful with more reasons to toast, where people and the planet prosper together.
