What to do from these alarming figures?
In principle, avoid perplexity and discouragement. In this sense, the World Day without Alcohol that is celebrated this November 15 throughout the planet is a good opportunity for all sectors involved to reflect and redouble efforts to rethink public policies on the matter and modify or encourage good practices related to road safety and education. This is how the United Nations (UN) and World Health Organization who, in collaboration with foundations, the corporate world, governments and multilateral entities, articulate different policies to prevent tens of thousands of deaths and injuries.
In our country, the State and the different actors that participate in the defense of raising awareness on this matter (business chambers, unions, NGOs, relatives of victims), must set a common agenda to encourage a drastic modification of behaviors, values, preventive and punitive criteria. Educate, raise awareness and ensure that, among other aspects, the driver is also responsible for the technical aspects of their vehicles: the proper functioning (and use) of the seat belt, the use of child restraint systems, the use of helmets in cyclists and motorcyclists saves lives.

Likewise, the State must commit itself, at all levels, to improve circulation routes, carry out controls and punish negligent conduct. In this sense, it is desirable that the Legislative power deal with haste -and approve- the Zero Alcohol at the Wheel billprepared by the ANSV together with the Ministry of Health of the Nation, the Secretariat of Comprehensive Policies on Drugs of the Argentine Nation (Sedronar) and associations of relatives of traffic victims.
As can be seen, avoiding this tragedy is a multidimensional task that requires a lot of effort and commitment by all the actors involved, with the State at the forefront. Let’s get to work.
