Odds, odds

At 10 am: women’s slalom. At 3:30 p.m.: Opening of the World Cup, followed by the opening game. At 7.10 p.m.: Formula 1. At 8.35 p.m.: international football match. Plus analyses, portraits and shows. ORF will broadcast ten hours of sport tomorrow alone – on ORF 1, not on the sports channel ORF Sport+.

The calculation is simple: sports broadcasts cost a lot, but bring above-average ratings. In times of tough competition from streaming and private TV, this is apparently an irrefutable argument for the program makers at Küniglberg. The downside of the coin: the program becomes monotonous – and those who are not interested in sports have to switch. Or switch off.

You can blame the ORF for a lot. For the fact that the world football association FIFA is planning a World Cup while the ski circus is already pitching its tents, but not. According to the public service mandate, the ORF is obliged to broadcast sporting events of national interest. In order to grant these rights to the ORF, at least those who can choose to request that their athletes be shown on ORF 1 rather than on the ORF Sport+ special interest channel.

If all this is too much for you, you don’t have to rely on the ORF. There are said to be other TV stations and recently even alternatives to linear television.
