Europe has outsourced security to the US, gas imports to Russia, growth to China and sustainable living to the next generation. It was easy, comfortable and practical. Anyone who outsources their vital interests – be it as a person, as a state or as a community of states – must know that this leads to dependencies and endangers our freedom. Europe is now multiply dependent and as a result has little ability to act.
Who protested against the years of ruthless saving in defense in Austria and Europe? Who opposed Russia’s totally one-sided gas supply? Who pointed out that cheap Chinese products – from jeans to semiconductors – are mainly based on anti-social low wages in China? Who called for the implementation of the eco-social market economy that has been part of the ÖVP party program since 1992? These are the essential questions that a MEP and Vice-President should answer.
I don’t recall any critical comments from Mr. Karas on these issues in the last 30 years.
