Miles away from the promised additional monthly salary, large parts of the care bonus of 2000 euros are lost in taxes, employee contributions and employer contributions. That leaves a good 800 euros net, which is far from equivalent to a full-time monthly net salary, even in nursing.
To think that the relevant federal states would be able to top up this bonus anyway fails because federal states such as Upper Austria do not seem to see a need for a financial appreciation of care. But not all people working in care receive even this bonus amount. For example, surgical assistants are granted the nursing bonus based on nursing assistant training, while surgical assistants based on medical-technical training are not granted the nursing bonus.
Ultimately, all surgical assistants do the same work, regardless of their categorization. The same applies to the profession of operational technical assistants (OTAs), which was recently approved in Austria. They also do not receive a care bonus.
A dilemma in nursing, in addition to the low pay and working conditions that are too harsh, is to raise hopes for improvements soon and to make promises of relieving reforms, which are ultimately only hinted at in a very reduced form.
