The Roter Veltliner – more than just the favorite of the sommeliers

The Roter Veltliner – more than just the favorite of the sommeliers

In addition, the Roter Veltliner has probably been one of the most underestimated grape varieties in the country in the past. Genetically not related to the Grüner Veltliner, the same was considered a mass carrier in earlier times (any amount of grapes could thrive on the vine), which as such delivered thin, meaningless standard wines. Luckily, this tide has completely changed in recent years. Top producers in Lower Austria have taken on the local variety, nurturing and caring for their vines in the best locations, looking for a controlled reduction in yield and allowing the wine to mature with great care in the cellar. The pioneer when it comes to Roter Veltliner is Wagram vintner Josef Fritz vom Zaussenberg. He discovered the potential of this variety more than 30 years ago, learned to love and appreciate it and is convinced that this variety is just perfect for him and for Wagram. With an enormous amount of work, including knitting, canopy work and rigorous yield restrictions, he ensures that the best grapes come from the top vineyards into the cellar.

Hans Setzer, Hohenwarth’s top winemaker, on the other hand says: “In the cellar we do the same thing with all the wines, namely nothing!”. The result of the meticulous work in the gardens are complex, elegant wines with which every sommelier can pleasantly surprise his guests. A wide range of aromas, ranging from pome fruit to exotic fruits, a fresh, pleasant acid structure that adapts positively to the taste profile, gives a more than positive impression with an optimal balance. For sommeliers and wine consultants, the “Red-White” is also a universal food companion that prepares enjoyment. Unfortunately, there is not much acreage available for this work-technologically whimsical variety. Almost 200 hectares have been planted, mainly on the Wagram, but also in smaller quantities in the Krems and Kamp valleys and parts of the Weinviertel.

All in all: a pleasure product that is highly valued in expert circles and not only the favorite of sommeliers, but also a popular individualist among wine lovers.
