tragedy in the city center

tragedy in the city center

…how many business premises in the city center (Enge Gasse, Stadtplatz, Grünmarkt and Pfarrberg) are empty. I’ve gotten to 23 and I know of two businesses that will end by the end of the year. I already know that stationary retail is suffering everywhere – thanks to Amazon and Co., but there are also cities that do something differently and a lot better. Look at catfish – but that’s where you spend a lot of money on well-functioning and dedicated city marketing and management. In Wels there is almost nothing empty in the city center. Here in Steyr, we take a different approach and save on all the city marketing at once – that’s a shame and an indictment!

The Advent market doesn’t deserve its name either – and that doesn’t come from me, but from the tourists who have visited our pastry shop in the last few weeks. There were still complaints. Roughly: We drive two hours to Steyr for that? Only drinking stands and nothing else! – Or: “You do such great advertising and then you come here and you’re more than disappointed.” Those were the friendlier comments.

You don’t get anything from the beauty of the city alone if it’s almost dead. But you can’t talk yourself into it anymore. And nobody does anything about it. The few pseudo-projects that have been started in recent years (LEO market and renovation of the square around the fountain, etc.) are clearly not enough. Steyr’s town square has been successively ruined over the many years. I am thinking of the outsourcing of various offices and authorities, the exodus of doctors and lawyers, the elimination of the bus reversal point and last but not least the HEY am Tabor etc.

Yes, I know, that’s due to progress – but none of that was good for the traffic on the town square. Instead of making up for at least a little with more commitment, you do the opposite. It is really an indictment that savings are started where an increase in the budget is actually needed.

If I were the mayor of a city whose downtown is in such a pitiful state, I would do anything to improve this predicament. And don’t save on city marketing too. It’s a tragedy!
