In the late afternoon we packed a small basket with goodies and set off to look for a suitable spot in the forest. We carefully placed the offerings on the ground near the trunk of a stately tree. Small bunches of hay, chestnuts, apple peels, fruit mummies and seeds, nuts, carrots and sometimes an egg. There was something for many forest dwellers. Anticipation could be seen in the children’s eyes, and we adults also felt deep satisfaction at having done something simple but special. The day after Christmas Eve and the days that followed, we returned to the forest and were curious about what had happened. There was great amazement and joy when the nut shells were cracked and only a few crumbs and shells were left on the floor. The gift giving was worth it and attracted some forest dwellers. Our children have long since outgrown their infancy, meanwhile two small, wonderful grandchildren enrich our family. I am confident and carry a spark of hope in my heart that reverence, respect and gratitude towards creation will remain in our family and that this beautiful, very special ritual will continue in the future.
