At the weekend I worked as a volunteer at the RK’s primary care emergency service in Linz. A patient from Afghanistan needed medical attention. He was accompanied by a young compatriot. When he left the surgery and said goodbye to me, he asked me to tell the doctor what symptoms the patient had. He might not be able to communicate properly with the doctor because of his poor knowledge of German. I asked him why, as a friend, he didn’t wait until the patient had been examined. He then told me that he wasn’t a friend at all, that he had just met the man in a hospital where they were both waiting for help in the ambulance. They were then sent from there to the RK. Because the refugee didn’t know where he had to go, the young man selflessly offered himself as a guide and interpreter, worried and made time for him. A nice gesture of charity in this “cold” time. Recommended for imitation.
