War in the middle of Europe, economic insecurity among many people, helpless governments, politicians getting rich, the list goes on. It is depressing that a formerly Christian-social party can think of nothing else on the subject of migration and flight than walls, fences and pushbacks.
More distressing, though not surprising, is that no hate speech, no accusation, is too demagogic for an opposition party to discredit people from other countries. And it’s not just depressing, it’s alarming that this party is number one in the polls. In which country, in which time do we actually live? Should Christmas pass us by again without a trace? Not the festival, of course, which is celebrated with gifts and sumptuous meals, but the message of peace seems to go unheeded again. I wish all people of good will that we seek common solutions to the pressing issues of our time and that we do not lose faith in solidarity and humanity. In this sense: “Merry Christmas”
