In need of reform
Apart from the fact that monument protection all too often fails when it really counts: when archaeological artefacts are found on construction sites and destroyed just to avoid risking an excavation site. Which buildings are under monument protection and which are not often seems to be subject to the arbitrariness of a small group of civil servants. Whatever happened to the Peham mansion in Hinterstoder, the fact is, it’s gone. It sounds absurd that a building that no longer exists should de jure still be a listed building. In the face of climate change, it is important to use soil sparingly and instead to revitalize derelict buildings in town centres. If monument protection is a hurdle, then please reform.

Christian Diabl
Better than his reputation
Without monument protection, our country would look different and many cultural assets would give way to short-term profit interests. Only a fraction is protected anyway. What the free market is doing with old buildings can be seen in the Neustadtviertel district of Linz, where one Wilhelminian style building after the other is being replaced by faceless but efficient off-the-shelf residential complexes. Of course, monument protection also has to keep up with the times and be more flexible in the refurbishment of old buildings in the interests of climate protection. Nevertheless, anyone who buys a listed building must know what they are letting themselves in for. Anyone tearing one off, too. It would therefore be an important signal if the unlawfully demolished Peham villa had to be rebuilt.
It’s all about this:
Villa Peham: Listed as a historical monument despite demolition
