So what, many think. It’s so cold anyway. Okay, a white Christmas would be nice, but we’ll get used to it. I understand these thoughts. Unfortunately, as a farmer, I know that there is much more at stake than a white Christmas. In recent decades, small-scale droughts have become more frequent. We farmers are the ones who have to learn to deal with it and make the best of it. But there will be situations where we just have to watch helplessly as crops wither or are destroyed by other extreme weather events. And the more frequent and widespread this happens, the more it will affect the entire population. The consequences will be even more serious than the energy shortage. Because when food becomes scarce around the world, the struggle for food becomes a struggle for survival. It’s a bleak prospect, but something can be done about it. We all have to work together to prevent the climate crisis from getting worse.
