Threat of deforestation

After the completion of this work, it would represent nothing more than a brutal clear-cutting of a healthy, shady avenue of trees.

The country’s bizarre rationale: Column-shaped replacement trees (which provide little to no shade) require less maintenance. Due to the massively recognizable, man-made global warming (climate change), large trees are irreplaceable, especially in a city for climate change adaptation. We should guard them like treasure! Tree protection equals climate protection.

Mayor Markus Vogl recently said that he will plant a tree for every newborn child in Steyr. A great announcement. But the country obviously wants to cut down a tree for every newborn in the city! Is that climate protection with common sense, which Governor Thomas Stelzer propagates?

In my opinion, such an approach is absolutely out of date and simply no longer permissible in times of climate change. Steyr’s environmental protection city councilor Katrin Auer was able to achieve at short notice that the start of this clear-cutting will be suspended for the time being and that there will be a joint inspection of city representatives and state officials in January. Many thanks to Katrin Auer for this last-minute effort.

But this clear cut has not been canceled for a long time, at the moment it is only postponed.

I think it’s time to not just use climate protection as an empty phrase when it “sounds good” but to take action. And since it was Christmas, I wish that City Councilor Katrin Auer would bang on the table and emphatically demand from Governor Stelzer: “In my/our hometown, healthy trees are no longer felled, quite the opposite, we take the opposite to the state of Upper Austria, we are serious about climate protection and are planting trees. That’s how it looks!” You can be sure of the support of many Steyr residents!
