It is taken from the Third Letter of John, verse 8 of which reads: “Therefore it is our duty to receive such men, so that we too can become collaborators for the truth.” Two things result from this: When Pope Benedict XVI. and even before that, as cardinal prefect of the Roman Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Joseph Ratzinger still believed in an objective truth that the human mind can recognize and without which any scientific and moral discourse would be impossible or degenerate into a mere exchange of subjective opinions. And the one who has now gone home did not think he was the sole owner of the objective truth, but considered himself only one of many collaborators in the spiritual struggle for its knowledge.
Such men can be found with a magnifying glass these days – and probably nowhere to be found even with that.
