Let’s take a look at Switzerland for comparison, comparing the figures from 2021 (2022 not yet available): Population Austria 8.9 million, Switzerland 8.6 million; Traffic fatalities Austria 362, Switzerland 200, in Austria the number of traffic fatalities is 81 percent higher!
Anyone who has ever traveled to Switzerland by car knows about the speed limits there (80 country road, 120 motorway). The controls are efficient and penalties for traffic violations are worthy of the name. The success of these measures is evident. There is therefore room for improvement in Austria when it comes to avoiding road fatalities, one would only have to want it politically. If more efficient measures to achieve this goal are considered, the self-appointed motorists’ representatives will reliably act as blockers, although they have no democratic legitimacy whatsoever.
By the way: In relation to the number of inhabitants, the so-called federal states (Lower Austria, Upper Austria, STMK) have significantly higher numbers of traffic fatalities than Vienna: Vienna has only 4.9 percent of traffic fatalities with a 21.5 percent share of the population. Why driving a car in the country is much more dangerous than in the city is probably also related to the speeds driven.
