The vision of an entrepreneur from the Argentine technology sector

The vision of an entrepreneur from the Argentine technology sector

The IT sector is definitely the vertical with the greatest dynamism in our economy since 2005 and it doesn’t stop giving us good results: four years of uninterrupted growth and surpluses only emphasize this fact. In addition to this, we all know that in that same period “things have happened.”

The turn back with the Knowledge Economy Law, at the beginning of Fernández’s administration, was a hard blow to the sector. Touch-ups, downgrades and revisions; the incentives of the 2020 “patched” law did not convince many, especially the financial teams of the largest corporations, which at that time were planning to centralize the provision of global technology services in Argentina.

Large companies put their expansion plans on hold thanks to these changes and delays.

Although during the pandemic the national government launched a plan to promote the creation of technological ventures to reinforce local talent and promote the creation of companies and the export of more IT services, that plan was annulled a few months later. Those of us who were hoping that the Executive would give us a hand to generate value with certain, verifiable and operational projects, once again we remain in the bitter wait.

At the beginning of October of the current year, Sergio Massacurrent Minister of Economy, launched the announcement of a new “Incentive Regime for Technological Sector Exports”, which would be put into effect through the creation of a new “techno dollar”which perhaps includes us in the Guinness book as the country with the most exchange rates in history.

With the premise of “to promote the generation of foreign currency and qualified employment, through direct investments in infrastructure, capital goods and working capital, aimed at the start-up of new projects or expansion of other existing ones that involve the development of activities related to the sector”, said Ministry seeks to recreate the successful strategy applied in the soybean sector, in an industry that is projected as the “savior” in 2023; year in which a drop in agricultural income is expected due to the decrease in harvests.

In short, we have a lot to do in Argentina with our IT verticals: regionally and globally scalable technology startups, super-consolidated international companies that demand more and more talent, the increasingly tangible reality of the perception of quality of our services. abroad (excellent and cheap), and the desire of young professionals to get paid in a currency that keeps them away from economic fluctuations, are an attraction for the income from exports in this area to multiply exponentially.

Those of us in the sector, which went from exporting almost 50 million dollars in 2003, to more than 1,500 in 2021, still believe that if the Government (whoever is in power) does not harm us, it is already helping us. Is it too much to ask that they give us that hand? It is appreciated…
