When it comes to the facts and figures on the global wheat market, Ms. Ritzler must have gotten a few things confused. In the interview, she gives the impression that Ukraine is a larger wheat producer than the EU. At 133 million tons, the EU wheat harvest last year was almost seven times larger than the Ukrainian harvest (20 million tons).
And although, according to food trend researcher Ritzler, we “have often exhausted the soil in Europe”, the wheat yields in the EU in the previous year were 5.3 t/hectare, two tons higher than the wheat yields in Ukraine (3.3 t/hectare).
