The loneliness of the leader and the importance of the virtuous circle

This phrase invites us to reflect on who are those with whom we share life -both professionally and personally- in order to understand that if we surround ourselves with individuals who contribute ideas, we can empower ourselves and go for much more.

For this reason, it is important to build a virtuous or leadership circle that offers us a vision of our life or work team and links us with people who enhance our skills and accompany us in the mission that lies ahead. The idea of a circle speaks of a whole, a geometric figure that has no beginning or end because all its points are equidistant from the center. It is the primordial symbol that contains everything.

The recipe for creating a virtuous circle

The basis of any virtuous circle requires several steps to follow. First, knowing that we have the ability to choose the people with whom we want to share our lives. Second, valuing the best in others because we are all owners of lights and shadows and, fundamentally, understanding what value we give to the world.

What can I learn from this person and what value does he offer to the world? We should ask ourselves when we meet someone. It is that the objective of the leader is not to be successful. The objective is to be valuable, and for this reason, other steps to build a virtuous circle are self-knowledge and the ability to understand what value others can offer.

The last ingredient, and no less important, is communication. Assertiveness when talking and giving feedback to the leader will be two of the best ways to add value. Part of leadership is simply knowing how to see and communicate with others to build a path together. This modeling of the dialogue is deeply transformative and a key point in the circle to highlight the outstanding aspects in each section that is conquered.

In assembling leadership circles, these elements work simultaneously. Once established, the team will ride alone, with maximum confidence, effectiveness, understanding and agility.

The clarity of the leader

“Clarity is power.” The only thing a good leader needs is to be clear about the mission of his team. “Their mission is the vision.” The leader sees beyond the horizon. He stands at the top of the pyramid to lead and convene the group to commit to his vision.

Many times, the leaders I work with tell me that they want to be good leaders. And I ask them why? It is useless for them to follow to the letter what the books and manuals say about strategic communication if the instructions do not provide them with clarity.

A good leader seeks excellence, not demand. On certain occasions, we fall into the need to believe that nothing is enough or that we did not make the decision in time to satisfy the entire group. This is the whip that limits us. Instead, excellence explains that today we make a decision with the resources at our disposal, but tomorrow that same decision can be changed or improved.

The vocabulary of a good leader involves learning something new every day, giving your best, accepting mistakes, listening to the team and making conscious decisions in pursuit of the mission you have.

I believe that when we become true leaders of our life and work, there will be a great mission ahead in which we will meet people who are not interested in joining our mission. The good leader identifies the true motivations of others to offer them a space in which they can genuinely join and from conviction.

Loneliness is also part of the path of leadership. There are times when we are afraid of this word, but a leader knows how to manage that loneliness to listen to himself and thus be able to make concrete and responsible choices.

We can all be leaders

We are all leaders and protagonists of our lives, beyond the fact that sometimes many behave as mere spectators. I want this and I choose it? The leadership of our own life has to do with choosing every day the way we want to live, understanding why we are going through this reality. We become leaders when we start making decisions and develop a vision: where we want to go.

Captain Lionel Messi, who gave us so much joy and clearly guided the Argentine National Team, is the best example of a leader in 2022. A few years ago he was criticized for not responding to the expected guidance model. But he learned to position himself and developed his own leadership style.

No two leaders are the same. Messi and Maradona led to successful results in different ways, sharing the passion for football and the clarity of what they wanted to achieve, to be World Champions.

“Courage is not the absence of fear, it is the triumph over it”, sentenced the American writer, Eleanor Roosevelt. In short, the courage to choose and the freedom to decide constitute the great challenge of every leader.
