In this article I invite you to know what I have called the dictionary of the RAE (Real Business Authenticity), expanded and updated version. Is a more honest and realistic form of expression, versus models that come from the industrial and post-industrial times that, perhaps, it is time to challenge.
We are not talking about specific technical terms of any particular industry, although we are well aware of the hobby of certain professionals. cool for speaking words in English almost permanently, when they could easily express them in the purest Spanish, and thus, everyone would quickly understand them verbally or in writing.
10 of the most common fillers (and their replacement page in the corporate dictionary)
What happens when a company begins to plague itself with fillers? Your message loses power. Because from repeating them so much, the words are “washed” of meaning and become set phrases.
As language creates states of consciousness, and these, emotions that are later transformed into actions, constantly repeating these catchphrases not only leads to a loss of communication sense, but will achieve the opposite effect to the desired one.
In case you hadn’t thought about it, each company has its own corporate dictionary, which is shared among all its members, and which forms part of its culture and rituals. The result of the practical application of said organizational culture will depend on the words, ideas and symbols.
These are, from my perception, ten of the most used fillers in all types of companies, and I propose some ideas as if they were replacement “synonyms”:
“Put on the shirt”
This over-repeated phrase implies that they want people to practically tattoo their company name on their arm, and proudly display it to the world.
The point is that to put on the shirt, companies need to do their part. This means, neither more nor less, than fulfilling its commitments, promoting in the first place the axis of labor well-being (including the personal, ethical and emotional) accompanied by the most balanced salary compensation possible. In addition, pay attention to the development of the individual potential of each person.
And another essential aspect: having a purpose that is contagious and that is identified with the individual purpose of each person on the campus.
Some “synonyms” could be: Increase commitment, Generate more involvement, Excite through a purpose that identifies all people, Develop the intra-entrepreneurial spirit in each person, Motivate to achieve their own initiative.
“Leadership that cascades”
You always want certain behaviors and level of commitment from top managers to cascade down to the entire organization. The wish is that there is a spill that reaches each member.
To achieve a cascading system of leadership, you will need to make it systematic and deliberate:
Systematic means that you will begin to see the entire organization as a great interconnected system, where each part plays a virtuous role looking at the objective to be achieved. There are no areas more important than others, so the network of hierarchies changes and a more horizontal vision is passed.
And it needs to be deliberate because it requires planning, determination, consistency and transparency, as well as commitment, which is the indestructible glue that will make people collaborate together and feel identified with the purpose of the company.
We could talk about Chain Leadership, Roundtrip Leadership, Leadership System and self-leadership based on individual commitment.
“We are a great family”
This phrase surely had its origin in family businesses, where the founder used it in toasts and celebrations. Now, are today’s companies one big family? How do the new family models fit into the reality of the company?
Although it is an interesting aspirational, we know that not all families are stable, authentic and well conceived. Perhaps it is time to leave that analogy, and check if there are other expressions that are more adapted to reality. And, of course, if you are a big family, go ahead and celebrate by eating the pasta on Sunday!
For the new dictionary: We are a group or team that works towards the objectives of the company with commitment and loyalty, We are professionals with the capacity to respond and we support each other, We are loyal in our ties, We trust each other and treat each other with affection, We generate a sense of belonging to the company.
“Focus on results”
It is enough to look at job offers and this phrase appears in ninety percent of company descriptions. And what else would a company look for other than results in any area and role?
Some options: Here the performance is measured based on your results, Permanent productivity towards the result of the company, The company lives based on results.
“People are our great capital”
Here we have the most recurring phrase in internal speeches, pronounced especially by someone on the board of directors, who rarely has direct hand-to-hand contact with the daily operation.
Knowing that there may be exceptions, it is best not to have to say it, since when we communicate it, it is because, internally, it is not always like that.
If it was so rooted in values and culture, why should we declaim it to the four winds, and reaffirm it in front of the staff? Why put it on your website when your client perhaps has a service of relative quality, which reveals that the internal reality is the opposite?
For the new dictionary: The objective of the company is to take care of each person as well as possible. The working capital is made up of the effort and talent of the people and what we offer to the market.
“Innovative”, “Disruptive”
The declamative values of the way we present ourselves reveal that perhaps we are not as well as we say; although if true, welcome.
If you want to include these words, think about whether you really have a culture of permanent innovation (which is not the same as change) and of disruption (which is not the same as sometimes doing something that is just a little bit different from the average you have been delivering). ).
Some phrases to consider: We produce significant transformations, We create unprecedented solutions before anyone else, We are a company that challenges itself to develop what does not yet exist in our market.
“We have no competition”
Bad news: we all have competition, direct or indirect. So believing it could be a fallacy. Rather, perhaps you do not have competition at a certain point in your services or products, or your system of unprecedented solutions is so revolutionary that you make a difference.
We can think about: We permanently break the mold of our sector, We are ahead of the competition with our own solutions, Continuous reinvention positions us in a differential and preferential place compared to the rest.
“Put in value”
In general, the subheading could say: “We are going to do two or three tweaks on this matter to see if we can get more money that way.” That would be more honest.
In the dictionary, perhaps it can be expressed as: We will make some changes and we will improve the offer of such a thing depending on the need for sales that we have; We will improve such aspects in order to get better profits.
“Team Synergy”
Synergy means cooperation, and it is a term of Greek origin, “synergía”, which means “working together”.
Teamwork is essential for any company. But are we always a “team”, or have you not yet dared to say that, for now, they are a “group”? There are huge differences between one aspect and another.
To consider: Improving cooperation among our members, Fostering collaborative bonds among staff, Encouraging areas to work together and empower each other, Learning collaboratively and unlearning to always be ahead of the new.
“Give 110%”
When talking about commitment, delivery and effectiveness, the metaphor of 110% is invoked to mean that more should be delivered than is humanly possible.
Is it always necessary to give 110%? Not enough with 100%? What happens if sometimes with 90% an extraordinary result is also obtained?
It is not about being mediocre, but about knowing how to discern what power to put into each action. Sometimes with the trade it is enough without always having to be a full percentage.
Some expressions for the updated version of the RAE academy dictionary, Real Business Authenticity: Give the maximum each time with the resources that we have available, Giving with a permanent focus on excellence, Constantly improving yourself to achieve and exceed what we have proposed, with maximum effectiveness.
The invitation is to stop using expressions that perhaps are losing meaning. This will allow us to prioritize the essentials and discard everything superfluous. In this way, communication will be simpler, more direct and effective, and the aspirations will definitely be much more realistic.
