How to reverse the gender gap in technology?

In Argentina, for years we have seen the commitment of various organizations to promote the education, development and professional inclusion of women in the technological field. Currently, there are programs such as Mujeres Tech carried out by the Metropolitan University for Education and Work (UMET), which consists of a Diploma in Technology aimed especially at women of all ages who wish to acquire technological training tools to access better job opportunities . Girls in Technology is another example: a non-profit civil society organization that since 2015 seeks to reduce the gender gap in the technological entrepreneurial environment at the regional level. But despite the efforts, the gap remains far from being closed.

A report made in December 2020 by the employment portal Bumeran and the Ministry of Economic Development and Production of the City of Buenos Aires [1] reveals that the participation of women in the IT sector represents only 33.8% and that the wage gap is 15.1% in favor of men. Although the presence of women in the IT world has increased compared to previous years, it is still necessary to make this problem more visible and to support initiatives aimed at creating a more egalitarian sector.

Ensuring that women work and are leaders in technology is not only a matter of fairness and ethics, but it is key to a good business. Companies are built and grow thanks to the talent of all their collaborators and the diversity of voices is key.

But to make real change, every organization must be proactively and consistently engaged. That is the way forward: supporting diversity and equal conditions in vocational education and training, ensuring the same opportunities, and encouraging the next generation to see this as a thing of the past.
