The focus is on the autochthonous white wine varieties Rotgipfler and Zierfandler as well as the Burgundy varieties (Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, St. Laurent and Pinot Noir). From the 2023 vintage, the DAC wines will be marketed in three different categories: regional wine – local wine – Riedenwein, which is easy for consumers to understand.

“It’s done,” says Heinrich Hartl, Chairman of the Regional Wine Committee for the Thermenregion, pleased about the successful completion of the “Thermenregion DAC” project. The 20-year DAC process in Austria, which began so successfully with the Weinviertel DAC in 2003, has thus also been finalized.

Pyramid of origin integrates leading varieties and diversity

The first DAC wines from the Lower Austrian wine-growing region will be available from the 2023 harvest. The three-level pyramid of origin for the Thermenregion DAC takes into account the leading varieties Zierfandler, Rotgipfler, St. Laurent and Pinot Noir as well as Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay at the top of the vineyard wines. In the case of the local wines, Pinot Gris and Zweigelt (Rotburger) are also bottled under the DAC seal.

The local wines of the thermal region bear the designation of origin Perchtoldsdorf, Gumpoldskirchen, Tattendorf, Wiener Neustadt and Bad Vöslau. The types of wine for the regional wines of the Thermenregion DAC (without mentioning the community or vineyard) have been expanded to include Neuburger, Mischer Satz and Blauer Portugieser in keeping with the tradition of great diversity.

The DAC circle closes

“I am very pleased that we have now been able to complete the DAC family with the Thermenregion!” comments Chris Yorke, Managing Director of Österreich Wein Marketing (ÖWM), and adds: “The DAC system is an Austrian success story: it allows everyone Area to legally protect its typical wine styles of origin. That is extremely important in the wine world, because: Grape varieties are interchangeable, origins are not!” A great statement that some critics of the DAC system should see in this way!
