Stupid but true
A real Viennese would give absolutely nothing to this stupid ranking. And yes, rankings are a thing anyway. But anyone who has lived there for a long time knows that Vienna can do a lot. It is the perfect mix of big city and Austrian cosiness. That’s a bit bland, but especially in times of multiple crises and instability, it’s easy to complain about this boredom in a wine tavern or in a coffee house. The Economist agrees, giving Vienna top marks in terms of stability, health, culture, the environment, education and infrastructure. However, Vienna does not have a subscription. The city has to make an effort in all respects in order not to have to live on the splendor of bygone times, as in the case of tourism.

Gmunden instead of Vienna
The title of the survey is misleading. Vienna may well deserve a top spot among the millions of metropolises in the world (even if you still have to explain to me why Vienna should be more livable than wonderful Copenhagen), but if you were to rate all cities, Vienna would probably not even be the most livable in Austria City.
The municipality of Gmunden, for example, beats Vienna by far in most areas. The Traunsee offers a backdrop against which even the imperial palaces pale. When it comes to safety, Gmunden is miles ahead of the federal capital anyway, and since the Traunsee tram came into existence, Gmunden has also been competitive when it comes to public transport.
