Do zoo animals need names?

Zoos cost money. In order to operate them, taxes and often donations are required. Of course, the acceptance for one and the willingness for the other is greater when you develop a relationship with a monkey, giraffe or goat. This works better if the animals are given a name and thus a bit more identity.

Of course, it is important to treat all animals in the world with respect and to protect endangered species. It is precisely to create awareness of this that contact with animals makes sense. What we are familiar with or even love, we are more willing to protect. Therefore, names for zoo animals are not just a PR gimmick, but an important part of the relationship between humans and animals.

CONS

All or nobody!

Remember Berlin Zoo’s polar bear Knut, who was reported around the world after his mother abandoned him and he was raised by a zoo keeper? When he died at the age of four, people mourned him all over the world. The situation is quite different with the many animal species that are dying out because we are contesting their habitat and food sources. Most of us don’t shed a tear for them – at least not if they are neither edible nor nice to look at. In order to draw attention to the fact that species protection is not only important for animals that we humans like, Schönbrunn Zoo has decided not to give individual protégés names with immediate effect. A good decision for the welfare of all animals.
