Threads: new digital threads of social mediation?

Until July 2022, Twitter had 237.8 million users. However, this great digital ecosystem has been going through serious difficulties.

The anger of Twitter users begins with an unfortunate move by the company, by imposing the reading restriction. On July 1, Musk announced a reading limit of 600 tweets per day for non-payerswhile for those who pay the verified account, it will be 6,000.

The decision adds to a series of changes that the tycoonalleged “defender of democracy”, has implemented, as is the case with the new account verification rules, through a payment; or the dismissal of workers dedicated to content moderation.

In addition, on July 3, Twitter reported that the extension TweetDeck, one of the most popular apps for organizing, scheduling, and publishing content, will soon be accessible only through a paid and verified plan. TweetDeck will not only stop being free from the month of August 2023, but will also experience some modifications to its features to improve its performance.

What’s happening Twitter? You were cool before.

a true copy

Threads, also known as the “Instagram Twitter”, is a content circulation platform that favors short posts and real-time content tracking. Threads posts have a limit of 500 characters and may include links, photos, and videos up to 5 minutes in length.

Although more rudimentary, Threads is a true copy of Twitter. C.With a simple interface, without visual noise or overstimulation, it has the same blue mark for verified accounts. It doesn’t have a trend search yet; Nor is it clear whether the aspirational content that Instagram promotes will be welcome on this network.

For now, Threads says to seek to reduce toxicity, misinformation and hate speech. A quite ambitious objective in the face of the malaise of the current systemic crisis; knowing that Facebook and Instagram have already had their own controversies on this issue.

Now, despite the fact that Threads is independent and its users can log in from their Instagram accounts, what is still not so well known is the fact that if you want to delete the Threads account, you must first delete the Instagram account. . This aspect can bring problems for influencers, entrepreneurs and the group of users who produce content on the network.

On the other hand, in terms of technical relations and its aspirations for the future, Threads’ greatest promise is not to be a centralized social network, that is, it would be looking for its content not to be stored on single-instance servers, such as is the case of Twitter or Instagram, and managed to consolidate what Meta calls the “fediverse”, a technological concept that allows data and users from different social media platforms to communicate with each other.

What does this mean? Let’s take the example of email. To start communicating by this means, you have to choose a server and, for this, you choose a platform such as Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo or others; an account is created and started to be used, regardless of the server on which the account is registered. In this way, heUsers can communicate with other users on any other server, that is, Gmail users can send emails to Outlook users, and vice versa.

Threads will be compatible with ActivityPub, an open social networking protocol created by el World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), international organization that develops open standards for the Internet. This integration will allow it to be interoperable with other applications that are also compatible, such as WordPress and Mastodon.

In this way, Threads users will be able to interact with most decentralized instancesas long as their servers are not blocked by others for some reason.

The European Union was left out

Threads was released in hundred countries and it works, for the moment, and unlike Twitter, no notices advertising. This could be, perhaps, the main threat to Musk’s company, since Threads’ core revenue comes from Meta.

Threads was the most popular free app for Apple in the UK and US. Not yet available in the European Union (EU)due to regulatory issues that prohibit the crossing of data collected from different applications.

As revealed by Bloomberg, Meta wants to know how your data will be regulated in the EU before launching its new service and awaits further guidance on the EU’s Digital Markets Law, which regulates the way large online networks use their market power.

It should not be forgotten that, in May, Ireland imposed the highest European sanction for privacy infringement on Meta. With a fine of 1,200 million euros, the European country in which Meta has its headquarters, sanctioned the company for lack of security guarantees for European citizens in the transfer of their data to the United States.

Who masters technology takes all?

Beyond the controversies that have arisen in the world of social networks since the launch of Threads, it is opportune to connect these facts to the general geopolitical scheme.

Not more than a week ago, from June 27 to 29, in the northern Chinese city of Tinjin, representatives of the business world, government, international organizations and academia gathered in the framework of the 14th Annual Meeting of New Championsor better known as the Summer Davos Forum.

As part of the most important topics of the debate, such as the analysis of the situation of the world economy, climate action, the energy transition and consumption trends in the post-pandemic era, the main representatives urged companies from the world to “increase investment in high-tech innovation field”especially in terms of artificial intelligence, big data and new energies, with the aim of “accelerating the process of global digitization”.

klaus schwabexecutive president of the World Economic Forum, also called the Davos Forum, in addition to invoking geopolitics and technology as fundamental elements for the destinies of the world, called for global efforts to combat fragmentation and guarantee global governance.

It is not less than the place where the representatives of global capitalism congregated has been the territory of the Asian power, one of the main leaders in scientific and technological matters. Beyond the perspectives that see a neo-techno-nationalism in China, what is on the horizon is new nuances of global governance under the initiative of the Chinese strategic project, which has managed to take a leap and gain competitive advantages over Western hegemony. The tension continues.

On July 6, Janet Yellen, Secretary of the Treasury of the United States, arrived in China in order to continue negotiations between the two parties. Yellen said she was “particularly concerned” by Beijing’s recent punitive measures, to the extent thate banned Chinese entities involved in critical infrastructure from buying Micron semiconductorsthe Idaho-based maker of memory chips, a move Washington saw as retaliation for US export controls aimed at thwarting Chinese efforts to source and develop advanced chips.

Both sides seek to stabilize ties after Joe Bidenpresident of the United States, and the Chinese president, Xi Jinpingagreed in November to establish a “floor” in the relationship and ensure that the competition did not escalate into a conflict.

taiwan It has been one of the issues that has generated the greatest tensions between the two powers, after the visit to the island last year of the then president of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi. The relationship deteriorated further when a Chinese balloon flew over North American territory. The United States has also imposed restrictions on the export of critical technologies to China, such as microprocessors, essential for artificial intelligence and robotics.

Ultimately, the tension technological mastery It is still in force and the techno-digital war between the great superpowers and their corporations does not stop.

At a global level, the conflict seeks negotiations against the threat of economic fragmentation; but also, within each strategic project, the conflict for the domain of the technological factor comes first.

For now, today we are almost on the verge of a “cage fight” among the main representatives of the New Financial and Global Aristocracy, Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg. More than a tragedy for democracy, these disputes end up being a complete farce.
