Pink transformation

Blond and blue-eyed: Admittedly, at first glance, the flawless Barbie looks like it has fallen out of time. But it’s worth taking a second look at the toy shelves, because the appearance of the doll has turned 180 degrees in the last decade: diversity in body shapes, skin and hair colors and professions has found its way.

From Barbie in a wheelchair to a tennis player Naomi Osaka doll, today’s Barbie represents more than pink princess dresses and an unattainable ideal of beauty. In addition to the hype about the cinema film, the figures also prove that the overdue change was successful: With the Barbie brand, the US manufacturer Mattel achieved sales of 1.7 billion dollars worldwide in 2021.

CONS

image care

Diverse, chubby, in a wheelchair, a scientist – Mattel has tried everything to get Barbie out of her image as the perfect blonde in a sparkling pink consumer world. There are those with the face of Jane Goodall, Angela Merkel or Frida Kahlo – albeit on skinny bodies, with lots of make-up and large breasts.

The real Barbie stays blonde, blue-eyed and flawless anyway. Well, toys are toys and have as much to do with reality as a Hollywood film. And doesn’t the success of the doll prove it right anyway? no A critical look doesn’t hurt, as does the relief that toy departments have more to offer than plastic dolls for girls and cars for boys.
