The dilemma that grows in future programmers: university or bootcamp?

Many times, university courses, the most traditional way of studying for those who finish school and want to continue training, do not adapt their curricula to the needs of the industry, which are constantly updated. Or even if they do, they present disadvantages in relation to other alternatives, such as the growing bootcamps, which are increasingly treading on the educational scene.

STRAIGHT

The bootcamp universe, which exploded in 2018, when it generated revenues of $ 240 million, It tackles that pothole in talent-thirsty companies, and at the same time presents itself as an affordable opportunity for people who want to specialize or turn their careers around.

Of course, companies fight among themselves to achieve these profiles with a focus on programming or knowledge of digital tools. To this is added that more and more processes are and will be automated in the workplace, so updating and being at the forefront of new technologies will be an obligation for those who want to enter the job market.

Why choose a bootcamp?

And being at the forefront means studying. The issue is how. But the trend is located in the bootcamps, which generally last between two months and -the longest- two years and they have a series of advantages over other forms of training, such as university.

Besides the weather, these in general do not require prerequisitesIn other words, they do not require a particular level of studies, only a desire to learn. However, according to data from Course Report, a report that took information from 101 bootcamps around the world, those attending these types of courses have a bachelor’s degree and have an average of seven years of work experience.

This last data also shows the tendency that many people sign up for these methodologies to redirect your career or just to specialize. In relation to this, training camps have more practical modules than university courses and, in general, they have no irrelevant subjects for your students.

They also provide a more up-to-date education than universities, the latter having more bureaucratic processes to renew their curricular systems.

Successful job placement

But one of the main reasons young people and adults choose to sign up for bootcamps is for the job exit. Course Report found that the majority of bootcamp graduates find full-time jobs and 79% of them said that in their new jobs they need to apply the technical skills learned in the course.

An interesting point for those who choose this alternative is the economic one. While bootcamps tend to have high prices – though often no more expensive than four to six year college majors – it all pays off at work. It is that the same report cited above stated that graduates of these training camps registered a 56% increase in their salaries.

Globally, the average annual salary is around $ 65,000, with the strongest salaries in San Francisco, while in Latin America this figure is in the 30,000 dollars per year.

Another undisputed advantage is that of pay parity achieved by bootcamps. In 2020, 41% of the graduates were women and, after finishing the courses, both women and men reported similar salaries, a trend that is growing little by little in the world but which still has a long way to go.

The pending challenges

In the region there is a wide and fruitful field to sow in the area of education in programming and technology. According to the report “The disruption of talent”, published in 2019 by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), only two of the 50 most important bootcamps according to SwitchUp are in Latin America and the Caribbean. Among them, Le Wagon stands out.

The data of the ECLAC demonstrate the lack of digital skills in the region, where less than 40% of the population has basic computer skills. As to more advanced activities, such as connecting and installing new devices and finding, downloading and installing software, the figure is reduced to 25%. And if it is about having written a computer program using a programming language, it falls to 7%.

Bootcamps seek to solve this existing problem in Latin America, although there is still much to do. The IDB recommends, for example, improve broadband structures so that these fields are not concentrated only around large cities and that the public sector aligns with the private sector to generate interesting proposals.

All these advantages that these forms of training offer can be inspiring for other types of teaching as well. In relation to this, the IDB also suggests research their education and training methodologies to spread this innovative spirit to schools, universities and training centers, in order for this to result in a labor market more adapted to the demanding global demands.

Meanwhile, Le Wagon weaves alliances of this type with universities in different parts of the world. It does so by offering courses in Argentina, with the IAE Business School; in Paris, with the School of Higher Studies of Commerce, better known as HEC; in Portugal, with Nova School of Business and Economics; and in England, with Imperial College London.

The focus is on growing this type of links with the institutions of the world and especially in Latin America. In Argentina, Le Wagon is in conversation with different universities to ally and promote talent. In this way, you will be closer to fulfilling the mission of inspiring others and educating more and more people in programming and technology.
