The importance of collaborative work

The importance of collaborative work

In the fast-paced world we live in, the importance of collaborative work is a fundamental pillar of any organization, whether public or private.

Companies function as high-performance teams, just like sports. So, the individual effort must nourish the group, because it is never only one who wins the games. The same thing happens in our work: we need the collective effort of interdisciplinary teams that generate synergies and enhance everyone’s performance.

This practice, which is growing day by day, has nothing to do with exclusively sharing a physical space, but rather with cultivating an organizational culture that encourages cooperation and the exchange of ideas in order to enhance the best of each company. In other words, between one that is excellent at producing cookies and another that is excellent at marketing and distributing, the natural thing would be for them to work together to thus accelerate the independent growth of each business.

According to the United Nations, it is estimated that around 660 million people will suffer from hunger in 2030. This serious problem requires that the food chain work together, more than ever.

The nature of these contemporary business challenges demands a diverse and holistic perspective, and bringing together individuals with their diverse skills, experiences, and knowledge, these teams also have the ability to approach problems from multiple angles, generating innovative solutions. Of course: the collective effort must also come together in a single and same objective.

An often overlooked advantage of collaborative work is its ability to foster creativity. Interacting with people who think differently can generate fresh and insightful ideas. The confrontation of these perspectives can trigger constructive debates and, in this way, build more complete and elaborate solutions. Edwin Catmull, founder of Pixar, tells in his book about the Braintrust sessions they created in the company in order to achieve collaborative, creative work and extremely successful films. There they bring together people from different teams and hierarchies to identify and solve problems.

Let’s imagine the same thing between members of all the links in the food chain where they all make up the same team. I don’t know if we would be able to completely solve the problem, but one thing is certain: we would greatly improve the situation.

The successful implementation of joint work is not automatic. It requires a solid infrastructure, the right collaboration tools, and clear direction. Leaders play a crucial role by setting accurate expectations, building trust, and recognizing the value of each member’s contribution. Between a leading company in the production of cookies and another that markets and distributes food throughout the country, there is, logically, a lot of potential, but there are also many edges to take care of, because the history and present of each one are and will be different.

In short: with a business landscape like the current one, where agility, innovation and adaptability are essential, collaborative work stands as a fundamental platform for success and much more, to solve complex situations such as food. (or lack thereof) in the world.

There are no magical solutions, but as in any career that one undertakes, one advances one step at a time.
