The new age of unicorns

The new age of unicorns

Latin America is the cradle of great ventures, and investors know it. The economic instability that characterizes the region, added to the growing penetration of the internet, stimulates resilience and innovation. There are at least 23 unicorns in the region. According to the Tecnolatinas 2021 report, we are facing a startup revolution in Latin America and the Caribbean: Latin American entrepreneurs are demonstrating world-class vision, business skills, and value.

TransparentBusiness, the platform to manage remote work that we created in 2012 and grew exponentially as half of the planet migrated to this work model, reached the category of unicorn last year. It is undeniable that the context benefited our proposal, as well as that of many other technology startups that today obtain more funding, but it was also important to think differently.

To obtain financing, we use a financing model known as Global Private Offering, which allows private companies to offer shares to individual investors before going public. Our successful experience with this equity crowdfunding model allowed us to meet our goals without having to seek traditional capital, and it was also the inspiration to create the Unicorn Hunters business program, where we present innovative ventures with the potential to become unicorns with the same tool. of capitalization. I have no doubt that very soon we will have a participant from Argentina.

The herd of Latino unicorns is growing, but many challenges remain, especially for women, because gender inequality in entrepreneurship is a global phenomenon. In 2020, startups led by women in Latin America did not receive a single dollar of the 4.4 billion dollars invested in Latino startups and, globally, they received only 2.3% of venture capital.

I am an entrepreneur, and a woman, and a Latin American, the first to lead a unicorn thanks to an innovative financing strategy, with which I was able to raise more than $ 40 million from more than 4,000 investors in more than 100 countries. And now I want to share with other entrepreneurs how I did it to encourage them to break the glass ceiling. Because this is a key moment for women entrepreneurs to create companies that change the world and create value. We come better prepared, we produce more and the statistics support it: we generate double the profits and build more diverse and creative teams.

As the IDB indicates, we are facing a unique opportunity for international investors to finance the economic recovery of Latin America and the Caribbean through women. We can not miss this opportunity.
