PER

Widely positioned

It wasn’t long ago that Austria would have been in a losing battle with such a long list of failures. But the ÖFB team is now broadly based. David Alaba will probably be represented by Kevin Danso, the defense chief of Champions League club Lens, who top clubs are after. For comparison: Belgium’s central defender Wout Faes plays for Leicester in England’s second division. Konrad Laimer, who is currently in this position at Bayern Munich, could help out on the right side of defense. The list of possible substitutes who play a role in the top leagues, from Florian Kainz to Patrick Wimmer to Christoph Baumgartner, is long. Austria’s team is weakened, especially in attack – but certainly not weak.

CONS

A tough game

The first half of the friendly international match against the Republic of Moldova (1-1) in Linz showed how hard Austria’s national football team is without well-known supporters such as David Alaba, Marko Arnautovic and Marcel Sabitzer, including the whistling concert. Although Belgium has not been spared from injuries, they have a different caliber, namely the number five in the world, who is able to exploit every conceivable weakness – especially in the defense, which has now been almost completely overhauled. It will take excellent training days, a medical department equipped with magical hands and the unconditional support of the 45,000 people in the stadium to meet the “Red Devils” on an equal footing.
