PER

Self-deception

We are told that the pension system is safe. But that is only if we are prepared to withdraw more and more money from the budget that is earmarked for education, research and other social services.
In fact, life expectancy is increasing continuously, but retirement age is only increasing slowly. If we don’t want a massive increase in contributions or a drastic reduction in pensions to a ridiculous national pension, we have to accept a higher retirement age. Some may perceive this as unreasonable, and in some cases (hard work) that is true. But in very social countries like Scandinavia, a pension system linked to life expectancy is no longer taboo.

CONS

Doesn’t help much now

“What, you’re always not net…?” is the reaction of many of my peers when I tell them that, at almost 65, I’m not yet retired. All statistics show: On average, we Austrians are only slowly approaching the so-called regular retirement age. As long as that is the case, there is little point in thinking about a general increase to 67. Unless you want to convey that we are only further behind a target goal. As a reminder: In recent years there has been almost a political race for early retirement options. And the economy was fine with it at a time when there was a surplus of workers. So we’d rather hack until we’re 65 if we’re physically able. It’s hard enough anyway.
