It plays a big role and is more than an award when the leading American trade magazine “Wine & Spirits” compiles an annual ranking of the top 100 wineries that serve the local market. Only wine producers who achieve the highest points after a multi-stage blind tasting process make it onto this select list.

This year’s “Wine & Spirits Ranking” highlights 4 winemakers from Austria who deservedly made it into the top 100: Dorli Muhr from Prellenkirchen (Carnuntum), Rudi Pichler from the Wachau, the Moric winery (Mittelburgenland) and Wachter -Wiesler from Eisenberg.

It is the Blaufränkisch from Dorli Muhr, from the top location Spitzerberg which is (not only) one of the best in the country and regularly scratches the 100 point mark. A vineyard that has rightly been classified as a 1st ÖTW location and which offers the approximately 60-year-old vines the sandy limestone soil that ensures an unmistakable taste profile.

The Wösendorfer Rudi Pichler in turn, is characterized by its philosophy of producing authentic wine from the best locations in the Wachau. Pure handcraft in the vineyards on the left side of the Danube bring Grüner Veltliner and Riesling in the Smaragd category, which deserve to be among the best in the country.

The Apetlonian Roland Velich years ago, together with brother Heinz, set itself the goal of giving Blaufränkisch what it deserved in order to be able to call itself a “terroir wine”! A wine of origin that does not stand out due to its width and opulence, but shows off its full elegance in a delicate and tightly woven manner. So we went to Neckenmarkt and Lutzmannsburg. There he found different soils that help the Blaufränkisch grow to its full potential.

And Blaufränkisch again – this time to Eisenberg! That’s where it is too Wachter-Wiesler family aware of what the soil and the climate together with consistent manual work can do for the local top variety. Again, no uniform, “made” wines, but simply craftsmanship from “Eisenberg”! Puristic, cool, delicate and precise vineyard wines!

On top of that, it should be noted: Of the 4 Austrians in the top 100 in the USA, 3 are red wine producers! So we’re all about red wine and Blaufränkisch is our international flagship!
