The Russian Orthodox Church advocated the prohibition of hunting as entertainment

In the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC), hunting is considered a relic of the past and is in favor of its prohibition. This was announced on December 4 by the head of the Synodal Department for External Church Relations, Metropolitan Hilarion, in the Church and Peace program on the Russia 24 TV channel.

“Hunting as entertainment – I think it’s a relic of the past. I think we need to give it up. The sooner we abandon this, the better, ”he said.

Metropolitan Hilarion stressed that he has a negative attitude towards hunting and believes that it is permissible only when it is necessary to regulate the population of certain animals. However, “for this there are experts – huntsmen.”

He also noted that hunting is fraught with human casualties: when the animal is taken in a ring, the hunters are opposite each other and can accidentally shoot a comrade.

“… there are times when people kill their own relatives. I know a case when a man killed his son while hunting, because he mistook him for an animal, so this is the kind of entertainment that is dangerous, which is absolutely unnecessary and which should be prohibited, ”concluded Metropolitan Hilarion.

In June, a verdict was passed in Primorye to a resident of the Lazovsky district, who, through negligence, killed two people while hunting. The man was given a suspended sentence, the prosecutor’s office planned to appeal the decision.
