Honored pilot voiced the possible reasons for the icing of the S7 airliner

The pilots of S7 did not notice in time that the plane got into the zone of intense icing, which is why the instruments began to fail and the liner iced up. This opinion was expressed by the honored pilot of the USSR, chairman of the commission of the public council for civil aviation of Rostransnadzor Oleg Smirnov on Saturday, December 4.

Smirnov carefully listened to the recording of the pilot’s conversations with the controllers and made several conclusions based on it.

“The plane got into a zone of intense icing. As a result, the devices that show the speed began to fail, and the crew did not notice this in time and only noticed when the plane had already fallen into a tailspin several times. According to the decryption of those materials that have appeared in the public domain. After all sorts of manipulations, they still managed to straighten the plane, and the commander of the ship decided to land in Irkutsk, which lies just during the flight to Novosibirsk, on this route from Bogdan. We have a lot of questions, ”he said.

The specialist noted that he did not understand why the plane was not landed in Yakutsk.

“Because Yakutsk is near Magadan, there is a magnificent runway, the weather was fine, and he could land there with all the ensuing consequences. It is close, to fly less with these malfunctions, but he decided to fly to Irkutsk, ”the expert asked.

The honored pilot also drew attention to the liquid that is poured over the plane before departure so that it does not become covered with ice. According to him, it is necessary to check the composition and consistency of the liquid used for compliance with the standards. If everything was in order with the liquid itself, then it could have been applied incorrectly: negligently, not completely clearing the plane of snow and dirt. Rarely, but there are still such cases when planes are deliberately not completely doused, because this liquid is very expensive, and some airlines are trying to save money in this way. In addition, one of the crew members must then visually assess how the plane was doused and cleaned, so this is doubly unlikely.

The pilot also wondered why the crew gave a distress signal so late, when the plane had already begun to fall, and wondered if they had been trained on a special simulator.

According to him, the incident was very serious, and the disaster did not happen only by a miracle: “The corkscrew is a 99.9% end judging by the decryption, the plane fell into a tailspin twice, came out of a tailspin. This speaks of the good quality of the aircraft and its wing. “

As Smirnov said, the full picture of what happened will become clear when the investigating commission examines all the available data, including the black boxes.

On December 2, the S7 airliner took off from Magadan to Novosibirsk. After the plane was transferred to the “direct” autopilot mode, control problems began. Then the ship began to sway strongly, and its speed began to fluctuate. The system signaled a “stall danger” signal, and also notified about icing of the first and second engines. As a result of the buildup, the plane lost 2.7 thousand meters of height.

According to a REN TV source, the incident could have been caused by interference in the control of the co-pilot’s board. According to him, the co-pilot could use the aircraft control stick simultaneously with the aircraft commander (PIC), while the Airbus A320 aircraft do not provide for two stick controls, since the signals are summed up.

On the fact of the incident, the Magadan Transport Prosecutor’s Office began to check.

The commander of the S7 plane refrained from commenting on the incident in detail, noting only that “an investigation is underway.”
