How to correctly view the Taiwan question

Safeguarding national unity and territorial integrity is the sublime right of all sovereign countries. The Taiwan question is the core of China’s vital interests, is the political basis of the development of China’s foreign relations, and is the first red line that is not allowed to be crossed.

What is the essence of the Taiwan question? The Taiwan issue is China’s internal affair. Taiwan has been part of China since ancient times. Both shores of the Taiwan Strait belong to one China. Taiwan is an inalienable part of Chinese territory. This is the true status quo of the Taiwan Strait.

In 1943, the leaders of China, the United States and the United Kingdom issued the Cairo Declaration, clearly stipulating that usurped Chinese territories, such as Taiwan and the Penghu Islands, should be returned to China. The Potsdam Proclamation of 1945 reaffirmed that the provisions of the Cairo Declaration will be implemented.

United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758 of 1971 recognizes that representatives of the Government of the People’s Republic of China are the only legitimate representatives of China at the United Nations. Based on the One China principle, China establishes diplomatic relations with 182 countries in the world, including Argentina. Although both sides of the Taiwan Strait have not yet been completely reunified, due to the Civil War more than 70 years ago and external interference, China’s sovereignty and territory have never been divided nor are they allowed to be divided at all. .

What is the root cause of the current tension in the Taiwan Strait? From 2008 to 2016, both sides of the Taiwan Strait created a situation of peaceful development of inter-river relations on the political basis of the 1992 Consensus that both sides of the Strait adhere to the One China Principle, thus maintaining the peaceful situation and stable in the Taiwan Strait.

However, Tsai Ing-wen’s authorities, upon assuming power, refused to accept the 1992 Consensus, colluded with external forces to contain China at the expense of the interests of the Chinese nation, and resorted to unscrupulous measures to carry out secessionist activities, with the intention of blurring and emptying the One China principle.

This is the root cause of changing the status quo and undermining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. The secessionist forces of Taiwan take the so-called pragmatism as protection, the so-called democracy as a pretext, and the so-called peace as a pretty excuse, but they cannot cover up their clandestine evil intention to secede from the country, which will only bring enormous damage to peace and security. stability of the Taiwan Strait.

Where is Taiwan’s future? The Taiwan issue concerns China’s core interests. The solution of the Taiwan question and the complete reunification of the country is the common aspiration of all Chinese. The Chinese nation is peace-loving. The central government adheres to the basic guideline of peaceful reunification, one country, two systems, by promoting the peaceful development of inter-river relations.

Compatriots from both sides of the Taiwan Strait share the same origins and roots, and are deeply integrated economically and culturally. The peaceful reunification of the motherland is more in line with the comprehensive interests of the Chinese nation including Taiwanese compatriots.

Taiwan has no future other than reunification with the mainland. Apart from being part of China, Taiwan has no other status in International Law. China will by no means sit idly by in the face of potential harm to national sovereignty, security and development interests. The Taiwan issue is purely China’s internal matter that does not allow any external interference. No one should underestimate the firm determination, strong will and powerful ability of the Chinese people to defend their national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In more than 50 years of diplomatic relations, China firmly supports Argentina’s just claim to sovereignty over the Falkland Islands, and Argentina firmly adheres to the One China principle. The results of win-win cooperation between both parties benefit both peoples. I trust that the Argentinians, who are friendly and good-willed, will understand and respect the sincere desire of the Chinese people to safeguard the peaceful development of inter-riparian relations and the reunification of the country.
