The Russian film Unclenching His Fists, directed by Kira Kovalenko, was shortlisted for the Oscar in the Best Foreign Language Film category. The list of applicants was published on December 6 on the website of the film awards.
On October 25, the head of the Oscar Committee of the Russian Federation, director Pavel Chukhrai, announced that the film “Unclenching his fists” would be nominated by the Russian Federation for an Oscar.
The film in Ossetian language was filmed in a mining town near Grozny. The main character’s name is Ada, she dreams of running away from her domineering father, who hides her passport. Her younger brother has signs of developmental delay, so all hope is only for the older one. He once escaped to Rostov, and now he has come to rescue his sister.
Kovalenko’s painting won the main prize of the “Uncommon View” program at the Cannes Film Festival.
In total, 93 films appear on the long list of candidates for the Oscar, including the winner of Cannes, the representative of France – a black comedy with elements of horror “Titan” by Julia Ducourneau, and the Romanian triumphant Berlinale “Bad Fuck, or Crazy Porn”.
A shortlist of 15 paintings will be announced on December 21st.
On October 25, Ph.D. in Philology, Izvestia columnist Sergei Sychev said that the film Unclenching His Fists has a good chance of winning an Oscar or, at least, being among the nominees.
Director Kira Kovalenko is a graduate of Alexander Sokurov’s workshop in Nalchik. Her debut film “Sofichka” based on the story of the same name by Fazil Iskander was released in 2017. Earlier, her classmate Kantemir Balagov achieved similar successes. His films have twice participated in the Cannes Film Festival “Unspeakable”, and the film “Dylda” was shortlisted for the Oscar. After that, he was invited to Hollywood to shoot a pilot episode of the Last of Us series based on the video game of the same name.
