Airmobile units for buggy are being created in Russia

Russian paratroopers, marines and scouts are switching to ultralight vehicles. Sources in the Ministry of Defense told Izvestia that the organizational structure of new units, which will be fully equipped with buggies, is currently being worked out.

This equipment should be received by airborne assault units of the Airborne Forces, reconnaissance formations of the Ground Forces and marines from the brigades of the coastal forces of the Russian Navy.

Several buggy models will be made for the airborne assault units, sources said. The paratroopers will receive fire support vehicles – they will be armed with machine guns, grenade launchers and flamethrowers. Anti-tank crews will be replenished with buggies equipped with anti-tank guided missiles (ATGM). Anti-aircraft crews – vehicles with portable anti-aircraft missile systems (MANPADS). Logistics divisions (MTO) will equip buggies for transporting supplies and even repairing.

Earlier, the Ministry of Defense reported that the Sarmat combat buggies were used in the West-2021 strategic exercises. During maneuvers, they were used as part of the airborne assault units of the Airborne Forces as light vehicles for fire support. It is known that the buggies were transported by Mi-8AMTSh transport and assault helicopters on an external sling.

The new vehicles, in conditions close to combat, were tested by soldiers and officers of the 31st Separate Guards Airborne Assault Order of Kutuzov of the second degree of the brigade. On maneuvers, they proved to be reliable machines.

The new buggy is a unified multipurpose floating vehicle developed as part of the Strela R&D project. In the army, depending on the modification, it is known as “Sarmat” or “Sarmat-2”.
