“If someone had previously shown me a picture of my current life, I would have just laughed and thought it was a joke,” Crown Princess Mary once said in an interview. And in fact there was nothing to suggest that the Australian would become Queen of Denmark.
Mary Elizabeth Donaldson was born in Hobart, Tasmania in 1972, the youngest of four children of a mathematics professor and a secretary. She studied law and economics and worked in various advertising agencies. When she met Frederik by chance in a bar in Sydney during the 2000 Olympics, she didn’t know she was looking at the Danish crown prince. “Half an hour later, an acquaintance came to me and said: ‘Do you actually know who that is?'” Mary said about the fateful encounter.
They kept their relationship secret for two years, and their engagement was announced in October 2003. On May 14, 2004, Mary and Frederik (55) married in Copenhagen. It will never be forgotten how Frederik had tears of emotion in his eyes when he saw his bride in the church. Mary and Frederik have now been married for almost 20 years and have four children: 18-year-old Christian, who is set to become king after his father, 16-year-old Isabella and the twins Vincent and Josephine, who have just celebrated their 13th birthday.
Mary won the hearts of the Danes and impressed the citizens of the small Scandinavian country with how quickly she learned their language. Margrethe’s daughter-in-law is also valued for her elegance – and of course because of her social commitment. In her private life she loves pop music, art and sport, Frederik and they are considered a well-rehearsed team.
“Some people think that my husband is in my shadow because I am so much in the spotlight and have many responsibilities,” Mary is quoted as saying in a biography. “But he will never stand in my shadow, and I never in his, because he reflects light back on me.”
