The Russian Defense Ministry decided to form additional, third squadrons in the armed Su-34 air regiments. New machines will be delivered there in a modernized version of the Su-34 NVO, sources in the military department told Izvestia.
The new version will be able to more effectively conduct patrols, reconnaissance and strike with precision weapons.
On December 7, the Ministry of Defense announced the entry into service of the Eastern Military District of several additional Su-34 bombers. They were received by the 277th Bomber Aviation Regiment, stationed in the Khabarovsk Territory at the Khurba airbase. The number and modification of new vehicles were not specified. Prior to that, it became known about the intention to deliver eight units of the modernized Su-34M by the end of this year to the Central Military District.
Since the spring of 2021, the Aerospace Forces have been receiving modernized vehicles of the Su-34 NVO variant, developed as part of the Sych development work. They received updated reconnaissance, target designation, communications, electronic warfare systems, a new navigation system and a powerful radar.
For the Su-34 NVO, several versions of unified suspended reconnaissance containers were developed – optical-electronic, radio engineering and radar. Their use will allow the pilot to independently detect a variety of ground, sea and air targets at a much greater range than that of the base Su-34. The range of “smart” ammunition used by him has also been expanded.
Three-squadron regiments used to be the standard. They were reduced to two squadrons after the collapse of the USSR, and they did it in vain, says the former commander of the 4th Air Force and Air Defense Army Hero of Russia Valery Gorbenko.
“With the appearance of the third squadron, the air regiments will again become independent tactical units,” he told Izvestia. – This is a good option – the combat capabilities of such formations will significantly increase. The number of aircraft, pilots and technical personnel with such a structure will be optimal. This structure of the regiment proved its effectiveness even during the Great Patriotic War, in subsequent years there were no complaints about it either. “
