The Witcher showrunner talks about filming the second season of the series

The second season of The Witcher had to be filmed entirely in the UK. The forced measure is connected with the pandemic, the showrunner of the Netflix series The Witcher Lauren Schmidt Hissrich told Izvestia in an exclusive interview.

The first season was filmed in five countries, for the second there were the same plans, but because of the lockdown, the entire film crew was not allowed to travel abroad. I had to move everything to the United Kingdom. Only a part of the scenes was filmed with a copter in Iceland and then edited on a computer with the material in Britain.

“We had never worked in such conditions and were not ready for them before,” says Hissrich. – It was necessary that everything was one hundred percent safe. Everyone is wearing masks, sanitizers everywhere, social distance, everything is free for everyone who works on the project. Everything is fine, but how to shoot, for example, party scenes, where there are several actors in the frame? It’s like a violation of all norms. The film crew of about 400 people – how to test them all daily to prevent infection? How to isolate people from each other as much as possible? After all, it is clear that someone will definitely get sick, and how to make sure that he does not even manage to infect anyone? We cannot then recruit the team and actors again! A million new problems, in addition to the old ones, suddenly fell on us, and all of them demanded immediate solutions. “

Hissrich also said that the lockdown put the very idea of a second season into question. Among the creative team, there were periodically assumptions that this project would not be implemented at all. This belief was especially strengthened when it was necessary to stop production, because sick people turned up on the site.
