Moscow is considering countermeasures to possible US sanctions. This was announced on December 10 by Dmitry Birichevsky, Director of the Department for Economic Cooperation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.
“The sanctions theme, it has not gone anywhere, it is firmly entrenched, unfortunately. We are working with the departments on countermeasures, but there is only one principle – not to harm our economy, not harm our producers and create conditions so that in any conditions, even with some serious political disagreements, there remains a window for constructive interaction, ”said he is at the international export forum “Made in Russia” in Moscow.
A day earlier, the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov said that any sanctions against Russia would be followed by a mirror or asymmetric response.
The day before, US President Joe Biden said that during an online summit he had warned Russian leader Vladimir Putin of the American administration’s readiness to impose harsh economic measures in the event of a “Russian invasion of Ukraine.” According to the US leader, he understands that Russia will respond to these harsh restrictions.
At the same time, Putin’s reaction to Biden’s threat to impose sanctions became known. According to Peskov, the Russian leader noted that restrictions are not new, they have been adopted for a rather long time, but they do not give any positive effect either for the United States or for Russia. The president himself called an attempt to restrain the development of Russia by the US statements that restrictions and sanctions are being introduced under the pretext of US security.
On December 7, negotiations between Putin and Biden were held behind closed doors via a secure video link. The talks between the heads of state lasted for two hours.
Biden drew attention to the allegedly threatening nature of the movements of Russian troops near the Ukrainian borders and outlined sanctions measures that the United States and its allies would be ready to apply in the event of a further deterioration in the situation. For his part, the Russian president emphasized the inadmissibility of shifting responsibility for what was happening on the shoulders of the Russian Federation, since it was NATO that was making dangerous attempts to conquer Ukrainian territory and was building up its military potential at the Russian borders.
