The first exhibition in Russia of the Italian artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo and his Mannerist contemporaries is scheduled at the Pushkin Museum in November 2022. About this “Izvestia” on Monday, December 13, told the director of the Pushkin Museum. Pushkina Marina Loshak.
Arcimboldo is widely known for his portraits, in which the faces of the models are “folded” of vegetables, fruits and berries. Two dozen of his paintings have survived to this day. None of them are in Russian collections.
According to Loshak, the exhibition was scheduled for 2020, but was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, and now the museum has to re-negotiate the receipt of Archimboldo’s works, which is incredibly difficult.
“At the exhibitions that I saw, there were no more than 10-11 of his portraits. We hope to receive at least seven works for our exposition. However, it is important for us to show not only his work, but also the artistic context of the era. So in addition to Arcimboldo, the project will collect 120-150 items of his contemporaries. There are already agreements on this, ”said Loshak.
Earlier, on December 7, an exhibition of works by the German painter Albrecht Durer opened at the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, timed to coincide with the 550th anniversary of the artist’s birth. The exhibition is based on carvings and woodcuts, as well as monuments of monumental engraving. In addition, there are portraits painted by Dürer, as well as sketches of church stained-glass windows, sketches for an engraving and a study for a picturesque altar.
