Soloviev was born on August 25, 1944 in Karelia. He made his debut as a filmmaker at the Mosfilm studio. The Assa trilogy, directed by the filmmaker, became a symbol for the rock movement during the perestroika period in the Soviet Union.

The film director was a laureate of the USSR State Prize. In 1981 and 1987 he was a member of the jury of the Venice Film Festival. In 1993, the film director received the title of People’s Artist of Russia.
