Scientists have found a link between B12 deficiency and the development of depression in the elderly

A lack of vitamin B12 increases the risk of depression in older people. This is evidenced by the results of a study by scientists from Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland.

The work used data from the TILDA longitudinal aging study, which involved 3849 people aged 50 and older. The condition of the subjects, both physical and mental, was monitored for more than four years. All of them regularly donated blood to check their plasma vitamin levels and underwent tests to identify symptoms of depression. The study was published in the British Journal of Nutrition on Monday, December 13th.

Scientists’ work has shown that older people who are deficient in vitamin B12 are 51% more likely to develop depression than people with normal plasma B12 levels.

“Every year, the number of older people with B12 deficiency is only growing, and since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, the number of those suffering from loneliness and depression has also increased. Our research highlights the importance of increasing your intake of foods or vitamin B12 supplements. It may help reduce risk factors for depression in people over 50, ”said study lead author Dr. Aimon Laird..
