Awareness and respect in traffic: keys to a citizen transformation

Promoting and encouraging awareness and respect for other people with whom we share public roads is essential. According to a December 2023 study by the World Health Organization (WHO), road traffic collisions claim the lives of approximately 1.19 million people per year worldwide.

March 5 is the Day of Citizen Awareness and Respect for Others in Traffic, an occasion to reflect on the importance of empathetic and conscious treatment on our streets.

In this sense, it is crucial to remember that, according to the Association “Let’s Fight for Life”, 90% of road accidents are attributable to human error, whether due to the way they drive, not respecting traffic directions or signs, using mobile devices, eating, manipulating the radio, entering routes into the GPS and not paying attention. paying attention to the road, driving tired, drunk or under the consumption of some substance. Only 10% of accidents are caused by mechanical failures and have to do with lack of maintenance of the unit such as: tire failure, brake malfunction, steering problems, transmission and engine failure. , or defective factory problems, which are complex to verify.

Taking this into consideration, it becomes necessary to recognize the leading role of compliance with traffic regulations, responsible for regulating driving under the influence of alcohol, the use of seat belts, speed limits, the use of helmets and the systems child restraint. Knowing and respecting these rules is not only a citizen’s duty, but also a fundamental measure to guarantee the safety of all road users.

In Argentina, in particular, we must continue working hard in terms of contributing to cultural change. In this sense, it is essential to focus on education so that, as children, we become aware of the role we play on public roads, whether as pedestrians, passengers or drivers. It would even be positive to implement a driver’s education subject in schools, generating awareness from an early age. With road education, awareness and respect for others, mortality figures could be reduced exponentially.

Today, technology allows the driver to know his driving style and notify him about dangerous behaviors such as: braking, sudden acceleration, acceleration in curves, changing lanes at excessive speeds, U-turns at high speeds, speeding. , among others. Having this information will make it easier for you to correct them and thus avoid the risk of accidents, in addition to encouraging you to drive in a more responsible manner.

The path to safer transit depends on our individual and collective responsibility. By adopting a conscious, respectful and polite attitude on public roads, we contribute to building a safer environment for everyone.
