The son of Yuri Nikulin spoke about childhood in a communal apartment

Yuri Vladimirovich Nikulin was known among his friends for helping to knock out apartments for them, although he himself lived with his family poorly and in very cramped conditions. Because he was too modest to ask for himself, said the artist’s son, now the general director of the Moscow Nikulin Circus on Tsvetnoy Boulevard, Maxim Nikulin.

“We lived in a communal apartment on the Arbat, there was no hot water or heating. The Dutch stove was fired with coal. My cousin and I were washed in the trough once a week. Everything was good and fun. But a room in a communal apartment is not a separate apartment. There were kerosene stoves in the kitchen. Grandmother went to Sivtsev Vrazhek in the kerosene shop with a can. In winter, she drove him on a sled, ”said Nikulin Jr.

It was only in the early 1960s that heating was installed in the communal apartment; a gas water heater, a stove, and hot water appeared. Relatives of the family constantly lived in the communal apartment, and in the neighborhood – an Armenian family and an elderly woman – she had a room without windows. The head of the Moscow City Council quite accidentally found out about the conditions in which the Nikulins live, and almost by force forced Yuri Vladimirovich to write an application for the apartment. Her artist was allocated three months later.
