Press Secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov, speaking of the possibility of pardoning blogger Alexei Navalny, said that there is a certain order, including an admission of guilt.
“The solution of this issue is the prerogative of the convicted person and serving a sentence, as well as a number of commissions – first in the colony, then in the region, then in the central, and then the head of state. On this score, there is a certain procedure prescribed by law: the convicted person submits a petition, where he says that he admits guilt, indicates what kind of guilt he admits, and then everything goes along the chain. All this is clearly spelled out in our legislation, ”Peskov noted on December 17 in an interview with RTVi TV channel.
On February 2, 2021, the Simonovsky Court of Moscow ruled to cancel Navalny’s suspended sentence in the Yves Rocher case and replace him with 3.5 years in a general regime colony. The decision was made due to the blogger’s numerous violations of the probationary period. Taking into account the time spent under arrest, the blogger will be in prison for 2.5 years.
On February 20, Navalny was found guilty under Part 2 of Art. 128.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“Slander”), he was fined 850 thousand rubles. At the same time, the blogger’s defense asked to acquit him, and to terminate the criminal libel case. Navalny himself refused to admit his guilt.
On August 6, FBK (an organization recognized as extremist in the Russian Federation, a foreign agent and banned) and Navalny’s Headquarters (recognized in the Russian Federation as foreign agents, extremist organizations and banned) were included in the list of banned in Russia, the Moscow City Court recognized these organizations as extremist. At the same time, the court ruled to turn the property of FBK, which will remain after the repayment of debts to creditors, into the ownership of the state.
On August 8, Navalny was charged with committing a crime under Part 2 of Art. 239 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, on the fact of the creation of a non-profit organization that infringes upon the personality and rights of citizens. It was noted that since 2011, Navalny with Ivan Zhdanov, Leonid Volkov and other persons led this organization, the activities of which are associated with encouraging citizens to commit illegal acts.
On September 27, a criminal case was opened against Navalny and his associates under Part 1 of Art. 282.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“Creation and management of an extremist community”) and part 2 of Art. 282.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“Participation in an extremist community”).
