The structure counts
Of course, a loss by David Alaba cannot be adequately replaced by the national team. However, ÖFB team boss Ralf Rangnick can prepare the team for a very long period of time. The national team’s greatest strength is its structure. There are enough players who are in their prime as a footballer – and can and want to take on leadership positions. Guys like Xaver Schlager and Konrad Laimer have been used to this for a long time, plus players like goalkeeper Alexander Schlager, Marcel Sabitzer and Christoph Baumgartner. This team is solid enough to cope with these failures. And it’s so strong that Marko Arnautovic has long been more helpful as a joker than in the starting line-up.
Collective is not enough
Team structure or not – of course the possible failures of David Alaba or Marko Arnautovic at the European Football Championship in Germany would be difficult to compensate for. Austria’s team now definitely has the quality to replace such top players in individual games – but if you look at the group opponents in the upcoming finals, a lack of these difference players would hurt twice as much. Against France or the Netherlands it won’t just be a strong collective that matters: the experience of a three-time Champions League winner Alaba or the brilliant moments of exceptional Arnautovic could hardly be replaced in such top duels.
