Judge Yulia Safina, who dealt with the cases of ex-governor of the Kirov region Nikita Belykh and former senator from the Karachay-Cherkess Republic Rauf Arashukov, died in Moscow from the effects of coronavirus. On Friday, December 18, REN TV reports.
She elected and extended preventive measures for the ex-head of Mari El, Leonid Markelov, the head of the Serpukhov region, Alexander Shestun, as well as police officers in the case of journalist Ivan Golunov.
It is noted that in May 2021, Safina was deprived of the status of a judge. She later appealed against this decision, after which she resumed her work. Recently, it has only considered cases of administrative violations.
In 2009, Safina appointed businessman Ilya Sherman to seven years in prison in a fraud case, but the Moscow City Court later overturned the sentence, revealing a violation of the criminal procedure law. It was noted that the court of first instance committed serious violations that “distort the essence of justice.”
Rauf Arashukov was detained on January 30, 2019 during a meeting of the Federation Council. He was accused of committing especially grave crimes: organizing the murder of two people, participation in a criminal group and pressure on witnesses. The former senator himself denies the charges.
On the same day, the politician’s father, adviser to the general director of Gazprom Mezhregiongaz, Raul Arashukov, was detained on charges of stealing gas worth over 30 billion rubles and creating a criminal group.
In October 2019, the police detained the cousin of the ex-senator of Beslan and the brother of his father’s wife Akhmed Kotsbu, who is the deputy director of the Gazprom Mezhregiongaz Stavropol branch. In December, the investigation detained four more defendants in the Arashukovs’ case.
In April 2020, the investigation added three more episodes to Rauf Arashukov: we are talking about two crimes under Art. 286 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“Exceeding official powers”) and Art. 306 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“Deliberately false denunciation”). By a ruling of a judge of the Moscow City Court dated April 21, the arrest was extended until July 24. On May 22, 2020, the first court of appeal overturned this decision of the Moscow City Court.
On December 8, 2021, the Moscow City Court postponed the decision to extend the detention of Raul and Rauf Arashukovs.
