In Saratov, by a court decision, a former traffic police officer will pay a fine of 30 thousand rubles for mining cryptocurrency in the building of the local police station. This was reported on December 20 by the press service of the regional Investigative Committee.
It is noted that the man was found guilty of a crime under Part 1 of Art. 286 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“Exceeding official powers”), he was dismissed from the police.
“By a court verdict, he was sentenced to a fine of 30 thousand rubles, with the deprivation of the right to hold positions in the civil service in the system of law enforcement agencies of the Russian Federation, related to the exercise of the functions of a representative of the authorities, for a period of two years,” the agency’s website says.
According to the investigation, from February to July 2021, the policeman installed two electronic devices to receive cryptocurrency via the Internet in a temporarily unused, but police-owned building at 6th Sokolovogorskiy proezd. The damage caused by the actions of the traffic police officer, “consisting in overpayment for electricity, amounted to 231 thousand rubles,” at the moment it is reimbursed, specified in the regional department.
The Investigative Committee for the Saratov Region added that the ex-policeman pleaded guilty both during the preliminary investigation and in the courtroom.
On December 9, the press service of “Mosoblenergo” was informed that an underground mining farm was discovered in the Moscow region, which was illegally connected to the company’s networks. According to the deputy general director of the company for interaction with authorities and security, Alexei Kalmykov, the volume of illegally consumed electricity for powering computer equipment amounted to more than 9.5 million rubles. A criminal case was initiated under Art. 158 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“Theft”).
