Russian cartoon was shortlisted for Oscar

Anton Dyakov’s short cartoon “BoxBallet” was shortlisted for the Oscar, writes Variety on December 21.

A total of 15 films are presented in the Best Animated Short Film category.

As a member of the American Film Academy, Oscar nominee, director Konstantin Bronzit told Izvestia, Anton Dyakov’s work has very high chances of being included in the final list of nominees.

“He really falls into the Oscar format. It’s a simple, clear love story with just the right amount of humor and drama. Americans (and most of them are among the academics) such cartoons and “need”, – says Bronzit.

According to him, Dyakov’s cartoon was very lucky, since the extended list of applicants this year included only 84 works, although usually their number exceeds a hundred. In addition, according to the expert, the Russian cartoon has weak competitors.

“There are one or two really strong films among animated short films,” said Konstantin Bronzit.

At the same time, it became known that Kira Kovalenko’s picture “Unclenching his fists” could not be included in the list of 15 films that would be nominated for an Oscar in the nomination “Best Foreign Language Film”.

On October 25, the head of the Oscar Committee of the Russian Federation, director Pavel Chukhrai, announced that the film would be nominated by Russia for the Oscar.

The final nominees for the award will be announced on February 8, 2022. The ceremony will take place in Los Angeles on March 27th.

Anton Dyakov was born on March 1, 1980 in Alma-Ata and graduated from Alma-Ata State University with a degree in painter. In 2010 he studied to become an Animated Film Director at the Moscow School-Studio “SHAR”. Created animation short films Bach (2010) and Kostya (2011). Acted as a production designer for the cartoon “Primitive Pope” (2012).
